The Church Missionary Society was founded in 1799 by a small group of laymen and clergy of the Church of England. It was originally named the Society for Missions to Africa and the East. Sir George Grey was Governor of South Australia 1841-1845, New Zealand 1845-1853, Cape Colony 1853-59. He was recalled to England 1859 for encouraging, without special permission, a policy of South African federation, but was later restored to office and was again Govenor of New Zealand 1861-1867.
